Overview

This BSc (Hons) Maritime Management (progression route) is a programme that will enable you to develop the essential knowledge and skills and prepare you for the evolving needs of the maritime industry.

Following the roadmap of the Maritime 2050 Report developed by the Department for Transport (DfT), this programme focuses on the principles and practices of sustainable maritime operations, emphasizing environmental stewardship, safety, and efficient resource management within the maritime industry. Emphasising the importance of maritime trade and connectivity in a globalised world, the programme explores the sustainable practices in the maritime industry to create future leaders.

This programme is for those students who have completed the Advanced Diploma/Higher National/Diploma in Nautical Science/Marine Engineering and have an interest in roles ashore in the maritime sector.

Course Modules

It is our aim to provide students with a range of learning environments and styles of teaching and learning which will suit the varied subject matter within the different modules, and support the needs of students at all levels of the programme. Teaching and learning will take place in the context of lectures, seminars, workshop activities, off campus trips and work placements, if applicable to your course, each supported by a comprehensive programme of tutorial support.

Shipping is the backbone of the global economy and as a business is a complex entity. There are hundreds of stakeholders in the industry, and they all work collaboratively to support the sea trade.
This module introduces the students to shipping as a business entity. It describes the relevant stakeholders in the sector and the interdependencies within them. This module will not only help the students to make an informed career choice in shipping but more broadly, will add to their knowledge and understanding of the industry.

This module references numerous basic skills that leaders and managers must master to be effective in their organizations. The range of required executive skills has grown in scope; both hard and soft requirements have expanded.  This module enables you to conduct a self-reflection and develop the skills needed to incorporate broader strategic considerations into your management decisions helping professionals with seafaring backgrounds to transfer to shore-based roles.

This module will develop the strategic decision-making skills through an appraisal of the external and internal environment, strategic options, and implementation. It enables students to develop an understanding of business strategy formulation and implementation with sustainability at its core. The Module will introduce the students to emerging technologies in shipping, which includes a range of
contemporary areas of development in Autonomous technology, digitalisation, and alternative fuel technologies in driving the industry towards achieving Net Zero Emissions. On completion of this module, the students will be able to use suitable strategic tools to provide strategic recommendations for a shipping company of choice.

Project Management plays a key role in achieving a business goal successfully. It is the process, which involves planning, securing, executing, controlling, and managing tasks and resources during the project. This module develops the basic project management concepts, where the students will be able to produce a shipping project plan for a chosen company of their choice. This module will also
introduce the students to the Business Cases developed at the initial stages of the project and outline the rationale behind continuing the project in line with the strategic goals of an organisation.

The Shipping Project module is a comprehensive academic endeavour within the maritime field. It
requires students to undertake in-depth research, analysis, and documentation on a chosen topic of
significance within the maritime industry. Participants develop critical thinking, research, and
communication skills as they investigate issues such as maritime law, environmental sustainability,
vessel technology, or trade economics. The module encourages students to propose innovative
solutions, contribute to industry knowledge, and make informed recommendations. Through this
rigorous research project, students gain valuable insights, enhancing their expertise and preparing
them for careers in various maritime sectors, including shipping, logistics, and policy development.

There are six workshops conducted to develop the research and academic writing skills. The first three
workshops are to be completed before the commencement of the core modules and the remaining at
the beginning of the Shipping Project Module.
The Research and Academic Writing Skills module equips students with essential tools for conducting
scholarly research and effective academic writing. Participants learn how to formulate research
questions, gather, and evaluate credible sources, and analyse data critically. They also develop the
skills necessary for structuring coherent, well-organized academic papers, including essays, reports,
and research papers. These workshops cover citation styles, proper referencing, and avoiding
plagiarism. Moreover, it enhances students' abilities to communicate complex ideas clearly and
persuasively. These skills are invaluable for success in academia, research, and various professional
fields, fostering critical thinking and effective communication in the pursuit of knowledge.
