Overview

The BA (Hons) Leadership and Management combines degree-level education alongside professional practice.

We have designed this course to give you the core knowledge, skills and experience that are required to pursue a career in management. As you work your way through the modules that make up this programme you will develop insight, expertise and practical experience to help you in your future career.

A central ambition of the course is in helping you understand how theoretical and classroom- base knowledge can be used in the workplace. When you complete this course you will have gained knowledge, skills and experience that will support your future career. We aim to make you much more than simply ‘employable’ – our intention is to support you in your future aspirations and to prepare and support you in whatever path your career takes.

Whist this is a full-time course, typically this course generally only requires 1-2 days on campus attendance, supported by self-directed study. This means you can continue to work alongside your studies and balance other commitments.

This module considers the core functions of managers and leaders. You will gain an understanding of how managers contribute to the success of businesses. We consider the internal environment of the organisation and external influences that influence the way managers behave. This module therefore introduces fundamental knowledge which you will use throughout your degree studies.

This module provides a basic introduction to identifying areas such as outlining a business plan, recognising and responding to risk, and developing an understanding of how marketing contributes significantly to successful business development. Marketing is a fundamental business activity and philosophy, which relates an organisation to its environment, and orientates the organisation around the needs of its customers.

This module is designed to introduce you to the principles of sound project management and to give you a chance to apply these in a work-based setting. When working across a range of sectors and settings having access to this knowledge and an understanding of how it might be applied in practice will help equip and prepare you for a range of future careers.

This module has been designed to enable those preparing for future managerial and leadership roles to develop an appreciation of the issues within the scope of both financial and managerial accounting in order for them to make the best possible managerial decisions. This module introduces you to a range of corporate accounting and financial aspects.

Marketing is a fundamental business activity and philosophy, which relates an organisation to its environment and orientates the organisation around the needs of its customers. Marketing is a major component in the management in all business sectors. This module will explore basic marketing principles in industries which are undergoing rapid change, and will be further developed at levels 5 and 6.

Today’s business climate relies on data. Business data is all the information that is related to a company, such as sales data, customer contact information, and even website traffic statistics. It is nearly impossible to make big decisions and enjoy growth if your business is not keeping track of the various details affecting operations on a daily basis. This module will introduce you to the world of business data management and data governance.

This module considers the nature of organisational behaviour, and the ways in which the study of organisational behaviour may inform the design and delivery of Human Resource practices within organisations while giving due consideration to the fundamental elements of legislation, recruitment, governance, development and retention of employees.

The Management and Leadership in Action module requires you to test and apply principles and ideas from previous modules in the workplace or work-based setting, to reflect on the relationship between theory and practice and to reflect on your own learning and career ambitions. It is designed to emphasise the development of skills and behaviours in aspiring managers.

 

This module will develop the foundation knowledge and skills which have been covered at Level 4, with particular emphasis on how various aspects of financial accounting relate to the business world and the knowledge required to help make managers make informed decisions where there are financial implications for an organisaiton

Innovation and creativity is increasingly being identified as the critical factor in ensuring economic competitiveness and a range of other beneficial social outcomes, including the employability of graduates. This module aims to equip you with skills and knowledge in creative thinking to encourage divergent thinking in a number of business settings.

The first part of this module provides you with an insight into topics, methods and functions of business-related research projects. Using case-studies and existing contemporary business research pieces, there will be a focus on drawing out important common research methods and learning, rather than subject-specific focus. The module is also designed to ensure that you appreciate the value of research (as structured enquiry) as part of professional practice.

This module will help you understand the importance of customer satisfaction and therefore, business success either within the profit sector or the not-for-profit sectors. In completing this module, you will be equipped with the advanced knowledge and skills to understand, evaluate and apply contemporary strategic approaches and techniques in marketing.

This module considers changing internal and external business environments, global dynamics and stakeholders that influence the development of goals and how effective management strategies and planning may be developed and implemented to achieve and maintain competitive advantage.

This module focuses on the role of Human Resource Strategy as a key constituent of the business strategy of an organisation. It builds on concepts first introduced at Level 5 to explore ways in which organisational performance can be enhanced by maximising the contribution of employees.

The extended research project offers you the opportunity to focus your attention on a topic of personal interest. It allows the development and application of specialist skills and knowledge and acts as a showcase for your academic prowess. You will apply knowledge and skills from other modules in response to a research aim (or question) of their choosing. In doing so, students may tackle theoretical or more practical topics.

Understanding change management will enable them to deal with the problems, choices and constraints involved in organisational change. The module encourages you to develop your own intellectual framework of values, attitudes and practice in relation to change, choices and values.

This module develops marketing modules from levels 4 and 5, providing you with the advanced knowledge and skills to understand, evaluate and apply contemporary strategic approaches and techniques in marketing, which help to deliver customer satisfaction and, therefore, business success either within the profit sector or the not-for-profit sectors.

This module has a dual purpose. For those whose future lies within the owner–manager in either profit-seeking or the non-profit sector, the module will provide the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to establish and run a business enterprise with confidence. For those who wish to pursue a more conventional managerial career the module will provide the knowledge, skills and experience that modern enterprising managers require are to lead and develop their organisation’s capabilities.
