Overview

Public health is an important aspect of practice for all areas and disciplines of health. It is therefore fundamental that students have a thorough understanding of what public health is and to be aware of the scope of public health including its history, the main principles and some key concepts and this will be the focus of the first part of this module. Considering the scale of health issues that exist in society, it also critical to have an awareness and understanding of the wide range of influences on health and health inequalities that exist. Students also need to be able understand the importance of assessing health needs in populations and this module will comprehensively introduce students to the principles and conduct of health needs assessment. It is also fundamental to develop an understanding of epidemiology in public health as epidemiology is a key aspect in public health and the second part of the module will focus on this area which includes epidemiological principles, key measures and terminology, epidemiological study designs, critical appraisal of these designs, interpretation of epidemiological evidence and application of epidemiological evidence to public health practice.
