Overview
The course has been set up in response to skills shortages in the sports industry. It has been designed after lengthy talks with employers, including health organisations and gyms, about the needs of the industry and the health needs of the population.
You will develop a range of transferrable skills that employers look for; such as producing a range of documents, analyse and synthesise information, work effectively within a team, manage your own learning and workload, solve problems and critically reflect on your own and others work. Graduates have gone onto work as exercise referral specialists, personal trainers, sports therapists, sports coaches and teacher training. (Some of these careers required additional study)
Course Modules
A significant element of learning for this course takes place in the work place and students are expected to have a work placement or current employment in the sport or health sector. For those who do not have appropriate employment in the sector, assistance will be given in securing an appropriate work placement. A combination of written reports, examinations, presentations, laboratory papers and practical assessments will be required as part of the course. Graduates will have developed knowledge of sport, exercise, health, fitness training and sports development and will be better placed for professional employment and career development in those sectors.

During year one students will study a range of modules which have been designed to develop fitness professionals with vocational experience and academic knowledge, these include Anatomy and physiology for Sport and Exercise in which students will learn about the structure and function of the human body; Personal Development which will provide students with the transferable and personal skills required for employment or self-employment; Social and Psychological Perspectives working in conjunction with East Coast Community Health Care will develop students understanding of social and psychological barriers to exercise and health and how to overcome them; Exercise Prescription and Testing and Sports Massage and Injury are practically grounded modules which are designed to equip students with the specialist skills required for employment or self-employment in the sector and Work Experience as a Resource for Learning provides vocationally relevant work-based experiences that benefit the learner by developing the skills and experiences in a work-based setting that employers are looking for.
During year two students will further develop their learning and become prepared for further study and work through a series of specifically selected modules: Advanced Training Techniques develops further fitness specific skills and is linked to the Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification (additional costs); Contemporary Issues investigates the latest issues in the sector, both nationally and at a local level; Skills in Research allows students to develop their investigative skills and provides the preparation needed to continue into further study; in Nutrition and Weight Management and Public Health Promotion students will develop and work with clients on case studies investigating the issues of health, weight and stress management; and finally in Individualised Work Based Project students are able to demonstrate their full range of knowledge and skills by undertaking a live project with an employer that draws on all the learning and experiences from the rest of the course. Students are assessed using a range of methods including; essays, reports, practical skills, multiple choice tests, portfolios, case studies and written examinations. Students will attend lessons over 2 days consisting of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Students are required to undertake a significant amount of self-directed study and contact with the course; this can be either done on or off campus and involve working with fellow students; or making use of course resources. Self-directed study is the responsibility of the individual student and is a key element of studying in higher education
