Overview
This course is designed for those who are committed to sport, health and exercise and have a passion to make a positive contribution to the health and lifestyle of their local community.
Lecturers offer in-depth vocational expertise from the public and private sectors, as well as research interests in strength, conditioning and exercise, the social and contemporary issues in sport, fitness, health and exercise, and psychology and dance sciences.
The progression year allows holders of appropriate Foundation degrees to achieve a full BSc (Hons) degree. Students continue to apply the themes of developing transferrable skills and academic knowledge whilst demonstrating greater levels of autonomy. The course offers innovative and varied modules including: physical performance science; functional movement education; wider determinants of health; sustainable professional practice and a dissertation. It is intended that the skills and knowledge developed on these modules can be applied to a wide range of sectors including the general population and athletes. Students will be encouraged to consider all individuals to be occupational athletes and assess the impact of their occupation on their health.
Students are able to take advantage of the excellent facilities on campus including a modern gym, sports hall, exercise referral suite and well-being facilities. Students also benefit from excellent links with industry, such as East Coast Community Health Care, Lowestoft and Yarmouth RUFC, Sentinel Leisure Trust, Health Professionals, other local sports teams and health partnerships.
Whist this is a full-time course, typically this course generally only requires 1-2 days on campus attendance, supported by self-directed study. This means you can continue to work alongside your studies and balance other commitments.

The dissertation provides the opportunity to develop an area of personal scientific interest arising from individual or course-based experiences. The dissertation will be a research-focused study, which will centre on the generation and testing of a hypothesis. It will enable you to utilise practical, intellectual and decision-making skills in new and different situations.
This module identifies some of the competencies, knowledge, skills and attitudes that reflect the developing professional standards within which you aspire to work in. You will explore the implications of sustainability and ethical issues in the future of the sport, health and exercise sector as well as their own professional practice. Emphasis is placed on developing the capability to learn from learning, to vision the future, to adapt to change, to think critically and act responsibly. A key component of the module is a study of the theories of normative philosophy, including teleological and deontological theories.
Physical performance is considered the ability of an individual to meet the demands of the activity in which they are engaged, and can be applied to daily tasks, occupations, and sports performance. You will explore the physical needs of a range of daily activities, occupations and sports and critically examine how a person’s size, gender, age and fitness levels impact on their ability to successfully undertake these activities.
This module explores the movement patterns that are important in normal daily activities, occupations and sports practices through the identification of asymmetries and functional limits. The module will critically explore the limitations of current understanding and practice in the field. You will screen individuals to identify movement issues and critically analyse the most beneficial corrective exercises to encourage sound movement patterns.
This module explores wider issues that impact upon public health across the specific populations and communities across the UK, including those identified as key priorities by NHS England. You will identify the health of a given population and examine any health inequalities within; students will further assess the impact of local and national government policies intended address health inequalities.
