The Project
This innovative project embodies sustainability, showcasing the future of eco-friendly design, construction, and living. As a collaborative research facility, the Smart House aims to address two critical global challenges: climate change and the UK housing crisis, by demonstrating how sustainable materials, low-carbon energy, and smart technologies can transform the way we live.
A Living Laboratory for a Sustainable Future
The DigiTech Smart House is a “living laboratory” designed to evaluate and demonstrate the performance of sustainable materials, energy-efficient systems, and intelligent water management. By combining cutting-edge technology with eco-conscious design, the Smart House offers a blueprint for affordable, sustainable homes that enhance lifestyles while protecting the planet.
Key features of the DigiTech Smart House:
Built to significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional construction methods.
Utilising IoT (Internet of Things) devices for building sensing, energy management, rainwater harvesting, and intelligent irrigation systems.
Showcasing innovative, low-carbon building materials that are both durable and environmentally friendly.
Designed to be easy to maintain and comfortable to live in, offering a vision for sustainable living that doesn’t compromise on quality of life.

Collaborating for a Greener Tomorrow
The DigiTech Smart House is a collaboration led by the University of Suffolk, bringing together a diverse range of partners, including BT, the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and Natural Building Systems. Together, we are driving innovation in sustainable construction and smart technology to create a cleaner, greener future.
Inspiring Sustainable Design Worldwide
The DigiTech Smart House is featured as a case study in the Active House Radars booklet, a collection of inspiring building studies by the International Active House Alliance. This publication highlights how the principles of comfort, energy efficiency, and environmental responsibility can be applied to create healthy, sustainable buildings that positively impact both people and the planet.
