Dr Helen Bailey (SSI)

Visiting Professor in Sustainable Construction Materials & Engineering at University of Suffolk. 

Helen graduated from The University of Leeds in 2005 with a First-Class honours in Architectural Engineering. From there she went on to work in research and development at Aggregate Industries, completing a number of projects and her PhD. Helen later worked in the field of asphalt recycling and tar remediation before joining the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) in 2012. During her time at TRL Helen contributed to an international team and undertook work across Europe, Middle East and Africa. Since leaving TRL in 2015, Helen set up her own consultancy, The Driven Company Associates Limited, which allows her to remain an active part of the industry she loves. Her current work focusses on supporting the supply chain and clients with strategic development, the transition to the circular economy and climate resilience.

In 2016, Helen became Fellow of the Higher Education Academy having gained a post graduate diploma in higher education at the University of Derby, where she also leads the asphalt and pavement programmes within the Centre for Mineral Products.

A Chartered Engineer with excellent technical capability, Helen has extensive experience in the development, integration, and delivery of challenging projects in both large and small organisations. Her unique experience and vision allow her to combine proven commercial expertise, industry, and marketing knowledge with academic capability for the successful delivery of a wide range of initiatives both in the UK and internationally.

Committed to continuous improvement and capable of driving change, Helen is an active member of a number of industry bodies. She is Fellow and Council member of the Institute of Asphalt Technology (IAT), Fellow and trustee of the Institute of Quarrying (IQ) and the National Stone Centre (NSC), Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) and Member of the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists (AAPT).
