Two students from the University of Suffolk have won the top prize at a conference for their paper focusing on environmental governance in developing countries.

Ufuoma Egbegbedia and Phyllis Ndono, both PhD students in sustainability, under the University’s Suffolk Sustainability Institute, won the chair’s award at this year’s SEEDS (Sustainable Ecological Engineering Design for Society) conference at Leeds Beckett University.

The University of Suffolk is one of four partner universities which organises the annual conference along with Leeds Beckett University, the University of the West of England, and Loughborough University.

Ufuoma and Phyllis’s paper explores strategies for enhancing environmental governance and the importance of effective technology transfer from developed countries to the developing countries of Kenya and Nigeria.

It also emphasises the need for fair resource distribution to improve sustainable development outcomes and highlights the role of citizen science in engaging local communities in environmental monitoring.

Overall, it argues for a collaborative approach that combines these elements to foster sustainable practices tailored to local contexts in these two countries.

Ufuoma said:” It was such an honour for both of us to receive this award for our paper.

“We are both so proud to have been recognised and rewarded at this international conference.”

Professor Darryl Newport, Director of the Suffolk Sustainability Institute and Professor of Energy and Sustainable Development at the University of Suffolk congratulated the pair on their achievement.

“It's fantastic to see such an important topic being recognised in a paper, and we truly applaud the hard work that Ufuoma and Phyllis have put into it.”
