Arts students at the University of Suffolk are putting the finishing touches to preparations for their end of year show which will be open to the public later this month.

Leila, a BA (Hons) Fine Art student, is one of 11 students across the country to be award the prize from the Freelands Foundation which supports and celebrates emerging artists and exhibits their work. Her work will be exhibited in a show in London in the autumn.

Leila, who works primarily with oil on canvas, said: “I found out I’d won via email and am extremely happy and excited about it. I also have an overwhelming sense of accomplishment as a painter.”

Jane Watt, Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at the University nominated Leila for the award and said: “Leila consistently strives to bring a fresh viewpoint to the tradition of portrait painting.

“Her quiet confidence as an emerging artist is striking and evident in her work.”
