Annual Law Lectures

We understand the incredible power of inspiration and how leading lawyers can spark ambition and enthusiasm in students to pursue and achieve their dreams. That's why, in November 2023, we proudly launched our annual Legal Advice Centre law lecture. We were honoured and profoundly grateful to welcome Baroness Hale to deliver the inaugural lecture.

Inaugural Annual Law Lecture with Baroness Hale

Baroness Hale, who was the first female Justice of the Supreme Court, gave a truly inspirational talk about her legal career and some of her most memorable cases, including the court ruling in 2019 that former Prime Minister Boris Johnson's advice to the Queen requesting the prorogation of Parliament, in the lead up to the October 31st Brexit deadline, was indeed "unlawful”. 

This was an inspirational talk during which Baroness Hale highlighted her key cases followed by a lively Q&A where the audience were able to discuss some of the topics in more detail.

Law Lecture with Sir Brian Leveson

In November 2024, we held our second annual Law Lecture and had the pleasure of welcoming Sir Brian Leveson as our guest speaker.

He shared insights from his illustrious career, including as chair of the Leveson (phone hacking) Inquiry and his role as the Investigatory Powers Commissioner, overseeing the use of investigative powers by public authorities like MI5 and GCHQ.

Following his visit, Sir Leveson was appointed to lead an independent review of the Criminal Courts. This review could revolutionise the criminal justice system, potentially rethinking jury trials and proposing an intermediate court with a judge and lay magistrates. His call to “challenge our current thinking” aims to address the significant backlog in the criminal justice system, promising groundbreaking changes ahead.

We look forward to reading the recommendations from the review once it is published in Spring 2025.
