Charlie is a lecturer in esports and the course leader for BA (Hons) Esports. He completed his Undergraduate and Master degrees in Computer Games Technology and Creative Technologies at the University of Portsmouth, and is currently undertaking his PhD in the relationship between in-game knowledge, decision-making, and expertise.
Charlie has worked on esports courses and modules involving broadcasting, event management, psychology, and sport science. Alongside his academic career, Charlie has nearly a decade of experience in the esports industry working on events and productions of varying scale, with partners ranging from Insomnia Gaming Festival to ESL FACEIT Group and DreamHack. He helps operate and facilitate broadcasts and events for a grassroots esports community and uses his experiences, both good and bad, to guide his teaching.
Charlie is passionate about esports and the skills it provides to students through teamwork, event planning, organisation, and collaboration. He is excited to teach students in the new professional-grade esports facility opening at the University of Suffolk in 2025.
Charlie's research interests focuses on the mechanisms of expertise and decision-making in games, with a focus on professional esports. He has experience in a number of qualitative research methodologies commonly used in games research as well as alternative methods including Notational Analysis and Cognitive Task Analysis.
